Smart Gifts, Smarter Choices: A Holiday Guide to Connected Devices
Because not every internet-connected gadget deserves a place in your home
Black Friday and Cyber Monday have just wrapped up, bringing their usual avalanche of deals and promotions. Internet-connected devices tend to be very heavily discounted at this time of year.
Did you buy any? In particular, did you buy any to give as gifts?
Internet-connected devices can be genuinely delightful – or wonderfully practical. I've got a few that make my life easier (even if my smart watch keeps reminding me it needs charging... again... for the third time this week!). But I've always been careful about choosing which ones to bring home. My research shows this isn't always the case for most people, though.
So, if you're eyeing some smart devices this holiday season, here's what to consider:
Think about who's getting the gift
Giving someone a smart device they haven't asked for can be tricky – especially since these gadgets often collect loads of personal data. Amazon Echo, Google Home, smart TVs, doorbells, and robot vacuums all fall into this category. If you think it's a nifty gift idea, make sure your recipient feels the same way!
If you're treating yourself, enjoy. But if you share your home, take a moment to consider your housemates. Most people know that the smart speaker in the corner picks up voices. But what about the smart doorbell tracking everyone's comings and goings? For homes with teenagers or other adults, it's worth having a chat about who will be able to see all the data it generates – especially if you're the only one with the app.
Consider long-term software support
Not the most exciting topic, but it's crucial. Many smart devices have a spotty track record with security updates. The UK's new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act now requires manufacturers to specify when security updates will end. If that date isn't listed or is uncomfortably soon, maybe explore other options.
Know your tech
Before buying, try to understand how the device works (though this can be surprisingly challenging). Key questions to consider: How's the setup process? Can others access the account? Are there user profiles available? What ongoing data does it need? And if it's linked to purchases, how can you prevent unauthorised spending?
Check the manufacturer
There's minimal regulation around adding internet connectivity to everyday items.
A company might make fantastic appliances but struggle with cybersecurity. Do you trust that washing machine manufacturer to keep your data safe? Better yet, do you trust them to keep the software running so your appliance doesn't become an expensive paperweight?
The million-dollar question: Is it necessary?
Why do you want this device? Research shows many smart gadgets end up collecting dust or get used differently than intended. I’ve spoken to so many families who use their smart speakers to do nothing more than basic Bluetooth speakers could (but with all the additional data collection). And that internet-connected washing machine? Sure, you can start it from your phone – but you still need to load and unload it in person!
This Christmas...
…where possible, focus on devices that truly enhance our lives, respect our privacy, and deliver real value. Not every gadget needs an internet connection.
Thanks for the timely reminder! It hadn't occurred to me that in giving an internet-connected gift, I could be unintentionally setting the recipient up to give away their personal data 😱 There's so much more to think about isn't there?
